19 Thursday

Spanish 2

I can
  • Demonstrate what I’ve learned on a cumulative test
  • Recognize the imperfect and explain when it’s used instead of the preterite

After the test, we listened to a song in Spanish to review vocabulary. After that I introduced the imperfect, which is the other past tense. This won't be on the test but will be useful for those who will take Spanish 3.

To study for the final exam, go to the sites on the Resources page and search for concepts that you find challenging or need to review, such as the preterite, stem-changers, or reflexive verbs. You can also search Quizlet for any chapter (for example, "realidades 2a") to review vocabulary. We covered chapters PE through 3, and chapters 1-3 each have a part A and a part B.

18 Wednesday

Spanish 1

I can
  • Use critical thinking to have meaningful discussions about culture as depicted in a movie

After the subject pronouns quiz, we watched the first part of the movie La misma luna (Under the Same Moon). We'll continue after the break; students must turn in their answers to the questions.

Spanish 2

I can
  • Use a study guide to prepare for a test

We reviewed some of the chapter's vocabulary with flashcards, students were given more time to finish the practice test, and then we went over it as a class. The final test before the final exam will be tomorrow.

17 Tuesday

Spanish 1

I can
  • Conjugate regular AR verbs in the present tense

Today I introduced the present tense of regular AR verbs. This relies heavily on the chart students have had to memorize, on which there will be a quiz tomorrow. To help remember the endings for AR verbs, remember them in order: o as a amos áis an. If you know the chart already and can visualize it, it will be easier to match the endings with the subjects.

Spanish 2

I can
  • Use a practice test for self-assessment
  • Use this unit's vocabulary and grammar in a group project

After the quiz, students had a group activity with the choice of three scenarios:
  • A person is in a city asking for directions. To help point out where places are, use the progressive and people as reference points (for example, “next to the person that’s walking”).
  • One person is chasing another person or a lost pet and asks random people if they saw him, who reply with actions in the preterite or preterite progressive and finally the present or present progressive when he’s found
  • The zombie apocalypse is upon us. A small group of survivors points out where zombies are, what they’re doing, or where they went.
At the end was a practice test that everyone must finish for homework.

16 Monday

Spanish 1

I can
  • Use subject pronouns to refer to people

We took a vocabulary quiz on classes and periods/blocks, and then we reviewed subject pronouns. The link in slide 5 below has great activities to practice these.

Spanish 2

I can
  • Prepare for the test with a study guide

Students worked on a study guide for the third and last test before the final exam. There will be a quiz tomorrow on the preterite including spelling changes and irregular verbs.

13 Friday

Spanish 1

I can
  • Use subject pronouns to refer to people

We started subject pronouns and a chart that is the foundation of most of Spanish grammar. There will be a quiz on this chart on Wednesday and another quiz after we get back. Make sure you can write the chart from memory and know what's included in each group.

Spanish 2

I can
  • Use the progressive tenses to talk about what is or what was happening

We went over irregular forms of the progressive tenses involving IR stem-changers and spelling changes (eiendo becomes eyendo). In third block we played pictionary. After a speaking activity, students wrote sentences saying what people in funny pictures are doing.

The quiz on the preterite on Monday will include irregular forms.

12 Thursday

Spanish 1A

I can
  • Create a newspaper article with student opinions about classes

We went over activity 7 on page 93, and then groups designed their own news paper articles based on student thoughts about classes. The assignment was to have opinions of 3-4 classes (depending on the number of people in a group) with two sentences for each subject.

Since I forgot to remind students in class, the quiz will be pushed back until Monday.

Spanish 2

I can
  • Use the progressive tenses to talk about what is or what was happening

We reviewed estar in the present and preterite, then I introduced the progressive, which is used when -ing is used in English. Practice included reading, writing, listening, and speaking. For further practice, go to the Resources page, visit StudySpanish, About Spanish, Quia, or Quzlet, and search for "progressive." You can also go to the Realidades student page.

Also, the quiz will be pushed back until Monday since I forgot to remind students in class.

11 Wednesday

Spanish 1A

I can
  • Use the new vocabulary with previously learned grammar

We did worksheets 33-34, speaking, and activities 6-7 for those who finished early.

Remember to study for the quiz on Friday. Look at yesterday's post for links to help you study.

Spanish 2

I can
  • Give commands in Spanish

After a scavenger hunt with candy as a price and a review of ustedes commands from the beginning of Spanish 1, we did regular and irregular tú commands, and then there was a choice to write text messages (on paper), talk with a partner, or draw a comic strip using tú commands as captions. DOPs were reviewed and used with commands.

10 Tuesday

Spanish 1A

I can
  • Use the new vocabulary to understand a dialogue.
  • Use context to guess the meaning of new words.

We went over a dialogue using recent and new vocabulary. Students worked in groups to say their lines, figure out what they mean, and answer questions at the end.

There will be a quiz on yesterday and today's vocabulary on Friday. To help you study, do the following:
  1. Go to Quizlet to review vocabulary using flashcards. Click on shuffle and keep going until you know all words. When finished, click the English button on the right and continue studying until you can do all cards.
  2. Click Test on top and see how well you do. Writing section can be very picky, requiring you to use accents and sometimes endings such as /a; don't worry if you leave out these for now.
  3. Play Scatter by clicking the top button. We didn't get to the words ellos, nosotros, and ustedes yet in class, but we will soon.
  4. Complete the activities here and here.
  5. Listen to the audio files here.

Spanish 2A

I can
  • Talk about where things are and how to get there.

Students used maps created yesterday to find objects on several maps using terms in Spanish when available and wrote directions to any place and to the school cafeteria. Volunteers and I listened to directions related to movement. We also reviewed direct object pronouns and how they can be used while driving.

Homework: Review the new vocabulary from Friday here, then complete the form below. Click here if you'd rather do the form in a separate page.

6 Friday

Spanish 1A

Students took test 2 today and then had the option of contributing to the word wall or participating in a class discussion. If you were absent, be ready to take the test next week.

Spanish 2

Today in class we went over new vocabulary related to directions as well as three new irregular yo forms. Students that didn't turn in their assignment from Thursday (which was to do a skit, a dialogue, a short story, or an essay using the majority of concepts learned so far) did so today; if you were absent, turn it in on Monday and look over slides 83-88 of the Tú y Tu Comunidad PowerPoint. For further practice, browse the links in the Resources page.

Download today's PowerPoint slides here.

Homework: Finish the assignment if you haven't already.
